What is QiGong?

Iga Amal smiling
  • QiGong is a “mindful movement” which originates in Ancient China, and trains the body and mind as one.
  • It brings many similar benefits to meditation, without the need to be still
  • It is also a full body exercise system: you will become strong in a progressive, safe way!
  • It is world’s first physiotherapy: it was a department of ancient Chinese medical school, and can help optimise healing in many conditions.
  • Research shows QiGong training helps HRV (heart rate variability), lowers cortisol levels and inflammation markers.

Having trained with Iga for some time now, I now face the pressures of academic life with much more ease and resilience: inevitable stress does not affect me as deeply. My confidence has bloomed and people around me notice! My only regret is that I have not joined the community sooner – QiGong seemed too “new-age” to me (though it is actually ancient), but I will never again judge something I do not know. It complements my lifestyle perfectly.

Attending Qigong classes has been transformative in improving my core stability, balance and breathing and it’s a fantastic community to be a part of. Iga is a knowledgeable and supportive teacher who makes classes fun, and I learn something new every time!

What Iga taught me is now a part of my daily life. I practise mini sessions throughout the day as stress relief, boredom relief, or if I want more energy throughout the day. I also use it to get more energy in the afternoons instead of having a siesta, or to relax in the evenings before bed. Also, I was getting a really stiff back, and after some weeks of training I could feel something shift, and the ache literally disappeared!

Meet Iga Amal

As an acupuncturist with a Master of Science and a martial artist, I’ve seen repeatedly how our response to stress is deeply linked to health, longevity — and even decision-making and focus! Ancient QiGong masters knew it, and science confirms it.

I’ve transformed my own resilience and energy and supported countless patients to do the same. I’ve overcome many internal “demons” and today, in addition to work, I’m a mother of three nearly grown children and a black belt in martial arts. Even though life’s demands have not decreased, I am calmer, steadier, and happier than ever.

I trained QiGong with Grandmaster Teng in Malaysia, as well as Master Chen DeQing and Liu XingBo in the UK. I am also a 3rd dan black belt in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu and a Taiji medallist – which helps me root my QiGong practice in real-life physical and mental challenges.

FAQs

What is QiGong and how is it different from Taiji (Taichi)?
QiGong is a system of movement and breathing, developed in ancient China as a means of maintaining health and prolonging life. It promotes good circulation and alignment and uses bio feedback mechanisms to improve mood and resilience to stress. QiGong brings you the same benefits as meditation, while also stretching and strengthening the body.

Taiji is an art of moving in a strong, stable and physiological natural way, with roots in Chinese Martial Arts. It develops balance and strength.

In China, businessmen may practise QiGong and Taiji for its health benefits: to increase focus and keep their body agile, while school children do it at the beginning of their lessons. Every martial arts master and every Taiji master will also practise some QiGong, also called “the internal arts”.

What are QiGong & Taiji classes like?
In my classes, you will be able to find a level of training which is right for you, whether you are a beginner, recovering from a disease, or a fit pilates instructor wanting to challenge your mind-body through another approach.
I teach with a focus on meridians and health, using my knowledge of the body as an acupuncturist, according to Western science and Chinese Medicine. I compete Taiji for fun and have won some medals under the guidance of Master Liu XingBo. In my classes, you will find a focus on QiGong enriched by Yang Style Taiji and QiGong-style meditation.
What are the benefits of QiGong and Taiji?
  • deep stress release: like a mini holiday for your mind
  • regaining alignment: which you can maintain in motion in daily life
  • increasing lung capacity: boosting your vitality and mood
  • regulating the central nervous system: becoming more resilient to pressure
  • Holistic stretching and strengthening with no need for a mat and no risk of injury
